About QICT

In the 1970s, as part of the Prime Minister’s economic reform program, a decision was made to establish a purpose-built specialized port facility for handling bulk imports. This led to the creation of Port Qasim, which covers a total area of 12,000 acres. Due to its strategic location near major shipping routes, the port enjoys close proximity to international trade. Port Qasim is well connected to the country’s transportation infrastructure, with direct access to the hinterland through a 15 km distance from the national highway. Additionally, it is linked to the national railway network through 6 railway tracks spanning 14 km within the terminal.

The idea for the Qasim International Container Terminal (QICT) originated in the early 1990s when the Government of Pakistan floated a tender for the construction and operation of the country’s first Dedicated International Container Terminal at Port Muhammad Bin Qasim. The tender was awarded to the P&O Ports group in 1995 for a 30-year period, and the terminal began operations on August 10, 1997. In 2006, DP World acquired P&O Ports globally, and as a result, QICT became part of the DP World portfolio in the Subcontinent Region. Known today as DP World Karachi, QICT is the leading container terminal operator in Pakistan and handles a significant portion of the country’s trade.

DP World Karachi is a major investor and operator in port and logistics services in the country. The company is dedicated to providing its customers with the best services in port operations and logistics for container cargoes. One unique aspect of DP World Karachi is that it employs its own private labor, resulting in substantial cost savings for its shipping line customers.
